Australia Plus will be available to selected broadcasters in the Pacific via Intelsat 18’s C band global beam and will replace the Australia International services on the West-Hemi beam and Intelsat 19.
This marks a significant change in the ABC’s distribution, moving from direct to home (DTH) to a syndicated service. The new Intelsat 18 service will be encrypted with local viewers accessing the channel through terrestrial broadcasters. The first broadcast from the new Intelsat 18 service began this week and will initially run open key and is expected to be encrypted by the end of November at which time it will become the sole source of Australia Plus programing in the Pacific. Australia Plus will also be available on Intelsat 20 catering to viewers in the Indian subcontinent.
